In order to serve our patrons in as many ways as we can, the Dalton-Whitfield Library provides a computer lab that can be used by anyone for free. Additionally, there is Wi-Fi access throughout the library. Printing and copying is offered in black and white for a per-page fee. For more information, look at the printing section of this page.
The last time the computer software allows anyone to log in is thirty minutes before library closes. The computers shut down automatically fifteen minutes before the library closes and anything currently being worked on will be lost.

Library patrons with a library card in-hand are allowed to use computers for a two hour session. The computer reservation software requires a unique library card number for each session. No patron is allowed to present more than one library card for computer use in a given day. If there is no one waiting, the reservation software will allow a patron to extend their session by one hour. This extension is solely at the discretion of the staff member supervising the computer lab.
Library patrons without a library card in-hand are allowed to use the computers for a one hour session. If there is no one waiting, the reservation software will allow a time extension of one hour. This extension is solely at the discretion of the staff member supervising the computer lab.
Catalog computers are provided for searching library holdings and are located in the main library sections. These computers can be used without a reservation. They are limited to accessing the library web-based catalog. Patrons are not allowed to use these computers for any purpose other than searching for library materials.
The library provides a printer. Black and white laser printing is available at the cost of $0.15 cents per page; color printing costs $0.25 cents per page. When a patron prints something from the computer, the reservation software calculates the cost of the print job based on the printer being used. Patrons must pay for their printing before the print job is released. All pages must be paid for even if the patron only wants part of a print job. Unfortunately, the staff member supervising the lab is unable to preview print jobs or answer questions concerning the contents of a print job awaiting release. All print jobs must be picked up within two hours of submission. Any print job older than two hours is automatically deleted by the software.
The library can make future reservations for the use of computers in the computer lab. Reservations require the patron to know their library card number when placing the reservation by phone, or to present their library card when making reservations in person. After making a phone reservation the patron must present their library card when they come to the computer lab. The library reserves the right to cancel any phone reservation if the patron fails to present a library card. Future reservations may be made no more than 24 hours in advance.
In order to listen to audio from the computers, patrons must bring their own headsets or checkout headphones from the library (if available.) Please be aware that headphone quantities are limited.
Wireless Internet is also available and will work throughout most of the library. Simply connect to any of the library hotspots. No username or password is required; however users must accept the wireless internet policy to proceed.
Printing & Copying
Printing and copying is available for a small per-page fee.

We use the AVG antivirus software on each Windows computer that should alert you if malicious software is present.
Each Windows computer in the lab also has a program called DeepFreeze installed. This program not only wipes the hard drive clean after each session, but also forces a restart to occur every day after the lab is closed. Therefore, no files can be saved to the next day unless through the Internet or another storage device.
By law, every computer is filtered with state-approved software that prevents accessing many inappropriate websites. No filtering product is 100% successful, and users should be aware that accessing pornography is illegal.

All ChromeOS chromeboxes are internet-based and do not allow users to download programs. In order to use software such as word processors, presentation software, and spreadsheets, users will need a free gmail account. The Chromebox software includes:

Northwest Georgia Regional Library System Computer Use and Internet Access Policy:
The use of the library’s computers and the Internet is a privilege, not a right. Inappropriate use will result in the cancellation of the privilege. All patrons are expected to use the library computers and the Internet in a legal and responsible manner, consistent with the educational and information purposes for which they are provided. Users may not violate federal, Georgia, local laws or ordinances, including the transmission or receiving of all pornography or harmful materials, fraud, or downloading copyrighted material.
No one under 12 years of age may access a computer lab PC without (1) a parent or guardian being in the library and (2) authorizing that child to use the lab at the start of the session.
Due to court decisions, all machines are filtered. Parents or guardians, not the library or its staff, are responsible for the Internet information selected and/or accessed by their children. Parents must supervise their children’s Internet sessions, as some information is sexually explicit, and other information may be controversial or inappropriate.
Under the Supreme Court’s decision and the government’s interpretation of the statute, libraries must turn off the filter upon request by an adult, without inquiring into the adult’s “purpose” for disabling the software. Under CIPA, a minor is anyone “who has not attained the age of 17.” Adults, therefore, include everyone 17 years old and older. CIPA provides that filters may only be disabled by a library administrator, supervisor, or other person authorized by the library for legitimate adult use.
That does not mean that the library cannot allow a child to be present at the workstation after his or her parent requests disabling of the filter. However, should the parent allow his or her child to use the computer, the parent is required to remain at the monitor during use of the (unfiltered) computer by his or her child. While allowing the child to “use” the unfiltered computer even in the presence of a parent does not literally comply with the statutory mandate, should a complaint arise, it is the parent, not the librarian, who bears the responsibility.
Information found on the Internet does not carry the library’s endorsement. While sites on the Internet are constantly increasing, not all these Internet sources provide accurate, complete or current information. Patrons need to be good information consumers, questioning the validity of the information found.
It is the responsibility of all library patrons to take steps to safeguard their personal information. The library assumes no liability resulting from the exchange of personal information on a library computer or through a library network. Personal information may include, but is not limited to, usernames, passwords, credit card information, or financial account information.
Library staff will answer basic questions about computer use and jargon. Staff cannot provide in-depth training on how to use the computer or Internet. Staff also cannot advise patrons on how to complete tax, financial, medical, or other private records due to liability issues.
The library computers each include an Internet browser, office applications, and miscellaneous programs such as CD burning software, Windows games, and accessibility features. The library allows use of removable storage devices. Patrons may purchase storage devices from a library staff member when items are available. The library is not responsible for damage to a patron’s data storage media or computer, or for any loss or corruption of data.
The library cannot guarantee that individual computers or computer resources such as the Internet or printers will always be available. The library does not guarantee that individual applications or Internet web-sites will be accessible or will work with the computers provided. The library reserves the right to perform maintenance, or conduct staff or patron training on the computers at any time.
No more than two individuals may use a single PC at any given time.
