CM – Geology Slideshow, Talk, and Walk

Georgia Rocks, The Georgia Appalachian Trail Club, Dr. Bill Witherspoon, and Chatsworth-Murray County Library are partnering together to provide a Geologist Talk and Walk: Fort Mountain on Saturday, April 9, 2016 beginning at 10:30am at Chatsworth-Murray County Library

Georgia RocksGeologist Talk and Walk: Fort Mountain, April 9

Dr. Bill Witherspoon, co-author of the popular guide, Roadside Geology of Georgia, will present a Fort Mountain slide show and geology walk on Saturday, April 9, in partnership with the Georgia Appalachian Trail Club.

About two hours north of Atlanta, Fort Mountain is the most prominent peak along the west front of Georgia’s rugged Blue Ridge, and is named after its mysterious pre-European stone wall. Its fascinating geology includes one of the lowest-elevation boulder fields in Georgia, billion-year-old rocks once mined for talc, rocks more than 600 million years old made of eroded fragments of the older rocks, and one of the Appalachians’ greatest faults.

The talk and slide show, “Fort Mountain Oddities: the Wall was the Last of Many,” will be at 10:30 AM in the Chatsworth-Murray Library, 706 Old Dalton-Ellijay Road, Chatsworth, GA, 30705.

At 12:00 noon, walkers can bring a sack lunch to gather at Picnic Shelter #7 near the West Overlook trailhead in Fort Mountain State Park. At 1:00, Witherspoon will guide a walk past the boulder field and outcrops of ancient rocks to the overlook, from which Lookout Mountain, 35 miles to the west, is often visible. From there, walkers will visit the newly restored 1930’s fire tower and then traverse the entire 885-foot length of the wall.

The events are free to the public. There is a $5 state park parking fee. [Please note: The State Park and Historical Site pass is available for checkout during normal library hours and can provide free parking for one vehicle.]

Roadside Geology of Georgia, a full-color 320-page guide, is the 25th book in a Mountain Press Publishing series for the general reader that has sold over one million copies. “Our goal is to take the reader to Georgia’s natural wonders and explain the science that lies behind the scenery,” says Witherspoon, who taught geology to K-12 students and their teachers for 17 years at DeKalb County Schools’ Fernbank Science Center, and co-authored the 2013 book with Dr. Pamela Gore of Georgia State University.
