Library Courier (part-time 17.5 Hrs.)

The Library Courier (NGRL) is responsible for driving the courier routes for the three-county regional system to deliver and pick up materials to and from all locations. Materials are sorted and distributed appropriately at headquarters for further routing.
Reports to: Assistant Director of Finance & Human Resources

Courier duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Drives the library delivery van on regular routes as directed, to library locations throughout the three-county regional system.
  • Works under the direct supervision of the Assistant Director of Finance & Human Resources
  • Load and unloads materials for routes; picks up, sorts, delivers materials throughout region.
  • Sorts and distributes materials appropriately at the end of each route.
  • Makes sure all relevant regional materials arrive to their intended destinations in a timely manner.
  • Assists in on-going maintenance of van by keeping it fueled, scheduling for service as needed, keeping up with washing, cleaning, and its general condition.
  • Retrieves recycling from departments throughout building and delivers to the recycling bin as needed.
  • Retrieves garbage and recycling from the Friends of the Library designated area twice weekly and delivers to dumpster and recycling bin as necessary.
  • Other building maintenance as assigned.
  • May courier computers, equipment, peripherals, network devices, and/or library materials to branch libraries for delivery

Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
Preferred Qualifications:
Minimum qualifications plus building maintenance experience.

Skills Required
Courier Requirements: (approximately 12 hrs. / week)

  • Valid Georgia driver’s license; excellent driving record; insurability
  • Safe driving performance on the job
  • Ability to communicate needs and understand/follow directions
  • Ability to perform physical tasks, lift up to 50 pounds, move loaded hand trucks with book cartons
  • Ability to stoop, bend, kneel, reach overhead, etc.

Customer-service skills:

Work Environment
The library courier will work in and outside loading and unloading heavy crates of library materials into and out of library vans. Some tasks may require bending, stretching, reaching and possibly lifting boxes up to 50 lbs.

Dalton-Whitfield County Library
YA Coordinator (PT)

The Young Adult Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of library service to the teen population at the Dalton Whitfield branch library under the supervision of the NGRL Assistant Director of Library Services. This employee will develop, coordinate and perform library programs for Dalton-Whitfield County teen patrons emphasizing services that respond to teen needs and interests and lead the Teen Advisory Group. The coordinator will play a lead role in advocating teen and school services, and actively participate as a liaison with schools and other agencies serving the same population.


    YA Coordinator duties include (but are not limited to):

  • Develop, implement, and present programs for teens in the Dalton-Whitfield County Library
  • Plan and implement an exciting Summer Reading initiative for teens
  • Provides public service, technology, and reference assistance to teens and other patrons as available
  • Assists in promoting and publicizing teen events and the library as a whole
  • Maintains and reports statistics related to youth/teen services as required to the NGRL Assistant Director Library Services and the NGRL Library Director
  • Attend regularly scheduled Youth planning meetings and workshops, webinars, and training as approved by the NGRL Library Director
  • Assists patrons in use of emerging technologies, downloading eBooks, downloadable audiobooks, etc.
  • Establish and maintain a relationship with Dalton City and Whitfield County Schools which includes planning and participating in literacy events, hosting tours, coffee shops, art exhibits, etc.
  • Select materials appropriate for the YA collection based on community need within given budget
  • Work with other Librarians to weed the YA collection as appropriate on an regular basis following the library’s Collection Development Policy
  • Assumes additional responsibilities and performs special projects as needed or directed.

Education Qualifications:

  • High school diploma with at least 5 years relevant library experience with teen services, Minimum
  • College degree and/or relevant experience in library and/or media centers, education, Middle or High School level youth work/experience desired
  • Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program and/or library teen programming experience preferred

  • Ability to meet the demands of the job schedule, including Tues-Fri. evenings and Saturdays

  • Use of Automated Library Systems (PINES) and Online Databases (GALILEO)
  • Use of Networks, Internet Browsers

Training, Skills, and Evaluation
Supervision and evaluation of this employee are provided by the Regional Library Assistant Director of Library Services during the 6 month trial basis and then annually each May. Specific training may be offered by members of the professional team from the regional system and Georgia Public Library Service. The employee is expected to be self-directed on day-to-day performance level.

Physical Demands
The nature of this work requires an ability to lift boxes and crates of books of up to 35lbs and push filled wheeled book carts. This employee must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time and reach above head, stoop, sit on the floor, and otherwise participate in physical activities with youth.

Working Conditions
Work is typically performed in a climate controlled library, but sometimes requires outdoor activities in parks, recreation centers, or other locations due to the nature of the programs being conducted. This position requires local travel to schools, councils, clubs or organizations to solicit support/donations, and attend meetings and/or training sessions.
